Sunway Healthcare and Putrajaya Holdings Sign Joint Venture to Develop Landmark Medical Centre in Putrajaya

Sunway Healthcare Holdings Berhad (SHH) and Putrajaya Holdings Sdn. Bhd. (PJH) have formalised a strategic 60:40 joint venture to develop Sunway Medical Centre Putrajaya, a planned 325-bed multi-specialty tertiary private hospital in Precinct 7, Putrajaya.

The definitive Joint Venture and Shareholders Agreement was signed by their respective wholly-owned subsidiaries, Sunway Healthcare Ventures Sdn. Bhd. (SHV) and Tapak Senja Sdn. Bhd. (TSSB), following the Heads of Agreement executed on 23 April 2025. The signing marks SHH’s first joint venture project since its listing on the Main Market of Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad in March 2026, and moves the project from planning into implementation.

Enhancing Putrajaya’s Healthcare Landscape

Sunway Medical Centre Putrajaya is planned to provide advanced medical services and specialist care across a wide range of specialties and sub-specialties, including a dedicated burns unit. The hospital is expected to serve residents of Putrajaya, the broader Southern Klang Valley and international patients, while strengthening the breadth and depth of healthcare services available in Putrajaya alongside established institutions such as Hospital Putrajaya, Institut Kanser Negara and the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia.

The future hospital will sit on approximately 2.5 acres of freehold land in Precinct 7, adjacent to Putrajaya Sentral. Located within Putrajaya’s only transit-oriented development (TOD), the precinct features Destina Putrajaya, a 97,000 sq ft integrated retail destination with seamless pedestrian connectivity to the ERL and MRT stations at Putrajaya Sentral.

With excellent rail and road connectivity and proximity to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Sunway Medical Centre Putrajaya is strategically positioned to serve both local and regional communities. Construction is targeted to begin in the fourth quarter of 2027, with completion anticipated in 2031, subject to the relevant approvals and project timelines.

Leadership Commentary

Dato’ Lau Beng Long, President of Sunway Healthcare Group (SHG), said: “This marks an important milestone for Sunway Healthcare Group and our first joint venture hospital project since listing. It reflects our disciplined approach to expansion, partnering with Putrajaya Holdings, the master developer of Putrajaya, to establish our presence in the nation’s administrative capital.

“With 27 years of operating experience, a network of five hospitals, nearly 2,000 licensed beds, around 80 specialties and subspecialties, and 28 Centres of Excellence, we bring a proven track record in complex and specialised care, clinical excellence, patient experience and hospital operations.

“Together with PJH, we aim to develop a hospital designed to meet future healthcare needs, broaden access to high-quality care and strengthen Putrajaya’s position as a medical destination for Malaysians and international patients.”

Complementary Strengths

The joint venture combines SHG’s proven capabilities in developing and operating complex tertiary and quaternary healthcare facilities with PJH’s extensive experience as the master developer of Putrajaya.

Under the partnership, SHG will lead the hospital’s clinical and operational planning, secure the relevant operating licences and approvals, and lease and operate the completed facility. PJH will contribute the project land and provide real estate development and infrastructure expertise to support delivery and integration of the hospital within Putrajaya’s wider urban ecosystem.

The collaboration reflects SHG’s commitment to expanding access to quality tertiary healthcare and supporting the needs of Putrajaya’s growing community. Through its wider network of hospitals and healthcare services, SHG aims to connect patients with specialist expertise and coordinated care, serving residents, businesses and visitors in the administrative capital and surrounding areas.

The proposed medical centre will extend SHG’s healthcare capabilities to Putrajaya, complementing the Group’s existing network and bringing a broader range of specialist services closer to the community.
