IKEA MALAYSIA TURNS 30 BY TRANSFORMING EARLY LEARNING FOR UNDERSERVED CHILDREN THROUGH THE SUPPORT OF RUANG PLAY

As part of its 30th Anniversary “Thank You Malaysia” campaign, IKEA Malaysia has teamed up with Yayasan Generasi Gemilang (YGG) to bring Ruang Play to life—the organisation’s first dedicated parent-child community learning centre. Through a donation of carefully selected IKEA products, the initiative transforms the space into a functional, welcoming, and inspiring environment where underserved children and their families can learn, grow, and connect.

Designed specifically for children aged zero to five from underserved communities, Ruang Play addresses a critical gap in accessible early childhood education. The centre offers a vital alternative for families facing long waiting lists for public kindergartens or those seeking additional support during their children’s most formative years.

At the heart of IKEA’s philosophy is the belief that play is far more than recreation—it is how children explore the world, build confidence, and develop the foundational skills for lifelong learning. This conviction guided IKEA Malaysia’s contribution to Ruang Play, reflecting the brand’s broader commitment to creating spaces where families can spend quality time together and where everyday moments of discovery become accessible to all.

“We believe creating a better everyday life extends beyond the home. It means helping build a society where every child has the opportunity to learn, play and realise their potential,” said Amanda Low, Country Marketing and PR Manager, IKEA Malaysia. “As we celebrate 30 years in Malaysia, we wanted to give back in a way that creates lasting social impact. Through initiatives like this, we hope to inspire positive change that lasts far beyond our stores, building stronger communities today while creating a brighter future for generations to come.”

Throughout Ruang Play, IKEA Malaysia has contributed a thoughtful selection of products, including the iconic BILLY bookcase, DUKTIG play kitchen, HUSET dollhouse, and more—each chosen to support the natural ways young children play, explore, and learn. Beyond furnishing the space, these solutions foster imagination, independent discovery, and meaningful interactions among children, parents, and educators.

Melissa Ngiam, CEO of Yayasan Generasi Gemilang, added: “The earliest years of childhood are some of the most important in shaping a child’s growth. Every family deserves access to spaces that support those moments, regardless of their circumstances. Yet for many underserved families, access to quality early learning isn’t always easy. Ruang Play was created to give these children and their families a place where they can spend meaningful time together through play and exploration. With IKEA Malaysia’s support, we’re able to create an environment where parents feel more confident engaging in their child’s development, educators have a thoughtfully designed space to deliver meaningful experiences, and children can simply enjoy being children.”

The initiative is a cornerstone of IKEA Malaysia’s 30th Anniversary “Thank You Malaysia” celebration, underscoring the brand’s enduring mission to create a better everyday life for the many. By helping build spaces where children can play, learn, and thrive, IKEA Malaysia hopes to carry the spirit of connection and growth from the centre into homes and communities across the nation.
